Machine Control Integration (MCI) is a transformative technology for excavators that has revolutionized the construction industry by significantly enhancing precision, efficiency, and safety of earthmoving operations.
MCI systems combine advanced GPS technology, a network of sensors and beacons, and sophisticated software to automate and optimize excavators’ control. Especially with the recent addition of powerful AI, this integration allows operators to perform complex tasks with new scales of accuracy, reducing the need for manual measurements and corrections. It all adds up to more efficient and cost-effective operations.
One of the most exciting recent developments in MCI is the integration of RodRadar’s LDR Excavate™ system. This system, which incorporates RodRadar’s Live Dig Radar® (LDR) sensing technology into the excavator digging bucket, takes MCI’s capabilities to the next level by providing real-time data and alerts about hidden infrastructure, such as pipes, cables, and other utilities, directly within the MCI interface.
By incorporating the LDR system into the MCI platform, operators can access this crucial information seamlessly integrated with the existing controls.

This week, RodRadar Australia assisted a local Council in New South Wales with a residential utility relocation project.
The Council utilised the RodRadar Live Dig Radar bucket to successfully identify the live underground utilities marked on location maps sourced from Before You Dig Australia.
Using both the ‘circular’ and ‘linear’ scan methods of the RodRadar LDR, workers were able to pinpoint the correct distance and depth of the sub-terranean utilities, then subsequently dig to gradually expose the utilities.
One Council worker stated that “the ability for this bucket to mark a position and approximate depth of utilities while I excavate is a huge help for me doing my job well and not striking pipes while digging. It gives me better confidence and I now have more control of my work”.
To find out more about this Council project, or for additional information on the RodRadar Live Dig Radar, contact us on 1300 837 391 or visit www.rodradar.com.au.
